Because Texas property taxes are among the highest in the U.S., the idea of replacing them is tantalizing. Be careful what you wish for.

In the race for Texas Comptroller, GOP nominee Glenn Hegar has suggested supplanting property taxes with sales taxes. Democratic nominee Mike Collier responded, slamming the idea in a TV ad.

Texas is famously a low-tax state. But the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, interested in “tax fairness,” said last year that Texas is in its top 10 of states with the highest taxes on the poor.

We doubt we’ll be hearing this one on the campaign trail, either. And that’s a shame.
