The Oklahoman: Tax Burden Is Heave for Many Oklahomans

TAX cut opponents often argue that Oklahoma already has a relatively low tax burden. A new report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) shows this is not true for many families.

The ITEP study — “Who Pays?” — analyzes tax systems in all 50 states and factors in all major state and local taxes. The report finds Oklahoma families with annual income of less than $18,000 still pay about 10.5 percent of those earnings in state and local taxes. Families earning $18,000 to $33,000 pay about 9.9 percent; those earning $33,000 to $53,000 lost about 9.4 percent to taxation.
