Model Development Intern Summer 2022

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, the country’s premier progressive tax policy research organization, seeks a model development intern for 28 hours a week for 10 weeks between June and August 2022, with flexibility on precise dates. Preference given to those available for on-site work in Northeast Ohio but remote applicants may apply.

ITEP believes in moving America towards worker justice, economic justice and racial justice by promoting progressive tax policy at a federal and state level. Our small, influential staff works with policymakers, reporters, and partners to research, support and develop tax policies that address inequity. Our unique microsimulation model and our research on corporate and individual taxes across income, race and geography steer the debate about tax justice. Join us to make a difference.

You will work with ITEP’s Data and Model Team Director (based in Northeast Ohio) to complete the rollout of our new microsimulation model platform. This position on a full-stack project offers a broad range of opportunities for learning and professional development.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Writing technical documentation
  • Code cleanup and maintenance
  • Research and evaluation of third-party tools
  • Use testing and submission of bug reports
  • Attending Zoom events
  • Other responsibilities dependent on skills and interests

Qualifications we value:

  • Interest in policy and economic justice
  • Interest in full-stack development
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Experience with at least one programming language (C/C++, PHP, Python, Java, JavaScript, VB/VBA, R, Stata ado, etc.)
  • Familiarity with structure of HTML and CSS
  • Familiarity with SQL databases

Outcomes may include:

  • Improved knowledge of working with public datasets such as American Community Survey (ACS), Current Population Survey (CPS), IRS Statistics on Income (SOI), and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

  • Improved skills at all levels of full-stack development
  • Improved tools development skills
  • In-depth understanding of ITEP’s microsimulation model structure

This internship is intended for undergraduates who will be paid $17/hr. Graduates or grad students will be compensated at slightly higher rates.
