In Michigan, families earning from $17,000 to $34,000 pay 9.4 percent of that income in state and local taxes. With a gas tax increase, that’s likely to go higher. Michigan families earning more than $392,000 pay 5.1 percent of that income towards state and local taxes, according to the Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy.
