According to a 2017 study carried out for the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a Washington, D.C. research organization, undocumented immigrants collectively pay almost $12 billion a year in state and local taxes, approximately 8 percent of their income. To put this in perspective, the institute observes that “the top 1 percent of taxpayers pay an average nationwide effective tax rate of just 5.4 percent.” Read more
