ITEP Work in ActionA more just tax system will level the playing field for all Oklahomans, providing more opportunity to save and build wealth. It will also benefit the economy, as equal opportunity for individuals expands the economy as a whole. The state must continue providing and expanding shared services that are often lifelines for low-income individuals, but this revenue to support these services should not be generated through taxes that place too much burden on those unable to bear it. State tax policy is not the sole cause of — nor the sole solution to — Oklahoma’s entrenched racial disparities, but the state can use tax policy to begin mitigating those disparities.
