Gas taxes are the most important revenue source that states have for funding their transportation infrastructure. But many state governments are struggling to raise revenue for infrastructure because they have failed to adequately raise their gasoline tax rates that have become severely outdated over time. Fourteen states and the District of Columbia have waited a decade or more since last increasing their gas tax rates.
