Law 360: Undocumented Workers Can Add $2.2B in Taxes, Report Says

States and localities across the country would reap an estimated $2.2 billion per year in taxes if the 11.4 million undocumented immigrants living in the country were granted lawful permanent residence, according to an Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy report Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the 5.2 million undocumented immigrants who would qualify for the deferred deportation policies President Barack Obama announced in November would contribute an estimated additional $845 million annually in state and local taxes if the policies are fully implemented, the report says.

“The fact is, undocumented immigrants already are paying billions in taxes to state and local governments, and if they are allowed to work in the country legally, their state and local tax contributions will increase significantly,” Matthew Gardner, executive director of ITEP, said in a statement.
