San Diego Union Tribune: Report Tallies Taxes from Unauthorized Immigrants

Unauthorized immigrants in San Diego County pay an estimated $218.5 million in state and local taxes annually, according to a report from the left-leaning Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

That amount could increase by more than $30 million, according to the report, if those unauthorized immigrants were granted legal status. In California as a whole, unauthorized immigrants pay $2.9 billion in state and local taxes, the report said, and that could increase by more than $400 million if they had legal status. Those taxes include personal income tax, property tax and sales tax.

Advocates for comprehensive immigration reform legislation that would create a path to citizenship for unauthorized immigrants welcomed the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy’s findings. Read more
