WREX Rockford: National research group: Flat tax structure favors wealthier Illinoisans

Another group has weighed in on the graduated income tax ballot questions voters will decide on in November. A research study conducted by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found the state’s current flat tax structure creates a subsidy for wealthier residents.

The institute is a national nonprofit group that analyzes tax systems. Their researchers believe Gov. JB Pritzker’s “Fair Tax” amendment could re-balance tax equity.

“Taxes are about more than just taxes, right,” said ITEP Special Initiatives Director Lisa Christensen Gee. “They also play a key role in driving some of these larger issues related to economic and wealth inequalities.” Read more
