BRISTOL, Tenn. – Poor and middle-class families in Tennessee spend nearly 12 percent and 9 percent, respectively, of their total income on taxes, according to a new report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

Those figures rank Tennessee among the “10 Most Regressive State Tax Systems” in America, according to the ITEP report.

According to the report, poor families in Tennessee spend 11.20 percent of their total income in taxes, while middle-class families pay 8.60 percent.

By comparison, according to the ITEP report, wealthy families in Tennessee pay 2.80 percent of their total income on taxes.

In addition to Tennessee, according to the ITEP, these states also rank as having the most regressive tax systems in America:

*Washington.

*Florida.

*South Dakota.

*Illinois.

*Texas.

*Arizona.

*Pennsylvania.

*Indiana.

*Alabama.

The ITEP is a non-profit, non-partisan research group that examines tax issues and policies across the country.
