Now that the U.S. Senate has approved a bipartisan immigration bill, and it is all but dead in the Republican-controlled U.S. House, those supporting reform are pointing to a report released last week by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy as another reason to support overhauling the system.
The report provides a state-by-state breakdown of the estimated amount of taxes paid by undocumented immigrants. In Michigan, that amounts to just less than $126 million. If immigration reform is approved, the report says, that amount would increase to $161 million, as people stop using fake Social Security or individual tax identification numbers. 
Taxes paid now by undocumented immigrants are on property, sales and income, according to the report. It also estimates there are 150,000 undocumented immigrants in the state. 
Nationwide, the report estimates there are 11.2 million undocumented immigrants, who pay about $10.6 billion in taxes annually. And if immigration reform is approved, that total is expected to increase by $2 billion.
