Times Argus: Vt. taxes least regressive but still skewed

media mention

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy has released a study looking at tax systems across all 50 states and found that Vermont leans less on the poor and middle class than do the other states; however, when looking at taxes as a percentage of income, the poor and the middle class are still paying more than the rich.

“In recent years, multiple studies have revealed the growing chasm between the wealthy and everyone else,” said Matt Gardner, executive director of the institute. “Upside-down state tax systems didn’t cause the growing income divide, but they certainly exacerbate the problem.”
